About the Wine
Charles Mingus on the bass was one cool cat. What better wine pairing to go with “Mingus Ah Um” than wines from Radog?!
“Ah Um” starts off with the infectious gospel piece “Better Git It In Your Soul”—Mingus shouts and hollers and roots the band on throughout, all the while driving the seemingly unstoppable momentum on the bass. Pair this catchy little number with a fetching wine—the Radog 2007 Riesling. The wine’s refreshing aromas of orange blossom lead your first sweet, smooth sip.
The Radog Riesling shows its sultry side as “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” comes through your speakers. The music’s distinctive melody complements the Riesling’s smooth flavors of honeycomb and candied citrus.
Ready to bebop? Radog Gewürztraminer is as charming and fun as the “Boogie Stop Shuffle”. Flavors of lychee, grapefruit and honeysuckle accompany a boppish melody, toe-tappin’ rhythm and great solos from the band.
This juicy wine has classic Gewurz spiciness, and enough attitude and sass to stand up to the more raucous tunes on “Ah Um”—“Open Letter to Duke” and “Bird Calls” stand out as great pairings for this wine.
White wine is perfect for hot summer days, but once the evening chill rolls in you’ll want to crack open a bottle of the Radog Pinot Noir and unwind with “Pussy Cat Dues”. This lilting little blues number provides the soundtrack for the raspberry and clover flavors of this excellent Pinot Noir.
Mingus shows off his versatility during the intro to “Pedal Point Blues”—starting off on the piano before moving back to the bass to back up some very stellar solos. At this point, the Radog Pinot starts to show off a little too—earthy notes make an appearance, then clear the way for bright ripe strawberries at center stage.
Whether you’re entertaining a crowd or simply relaxing on the patio, “Mingus Ah Um” and Radog Wines will brighten the conversation or simply underscore a relaxing evening at home.
About the Music
There are shouts and howls on tracks rooted in earthy blues and gospel.
Charles Mingus’s 1959 Columbia sessions were both a summation of his diverse work up to that point and a bold step forward, for it was the year when at last he had the opportunity to sign with a major label and work with an old friend and musical collaborator, Teo Macero. There was no stopping this incredible musical mind who’d found his voice as a bassist, composer and bandleader.
The bands that Mingus assembled at Columbia’s 30th Street studio in May and November ’59 consisted of the greatest exponents of his music to date, featuring sidemen Jimmy Knepper, John Handy, Booker Ervin, Horace Parlan and Dannie Richmond. These 1959 sessions, which resulted in MINGUS AH UM and MINGUS DYNASTY, introduced several classics that would become evergreens in the bassist’s repertoire and jazz standards for the rest of us: “Better Git It In Your Soul,” “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” and “Fables Of Faubus,” plus homages to jazz greats Ellington (“Open Letter To Duke”)—with whom Mingus is most frequently (and fairly) compared for the vastness, depth and diversity of his recordings—and Morton (“Jelly Roll”), jazz’s first great composer.
