About the Wine
For decades, Frank Sinatra has provided the soundtrack of many a lover. What better music to woo by than the crooning of Ol’ Blue Eyes? What better wine to help set the mood than this sultry Seduction Vertical from O’Brien Estate? Three CDs – three vintages. Get ready for romance.
The first CD in this collection features some of the oldest Sinatra recordings – its only fitting to pair with the 2004 Seduction. This 92-point (Wine Enthusiast) drop-dead gorgeous wine is a rich, fruit-forward and age-worthy blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc (not Frank!), and Merlot. Over familiar standards like “All Or Nothing At All”, “Oh! Look At Me Now” and “Night And Day”, the wine reveals its rich blue and blackberry flavors, with tannins as silky as Sinatra’s vocals. There are some lesser known gems on this disc as well – the heart of the album features “I’ll Never Smile Again” and “The One I Love (Belongs To Somebody Else)”. The melancholy lyrics and Frank’s spot-on interpretation bring out the darker notes in the wine – mocha and the warm toast of oak.
The Seduction continues with Disc 2 and the 2005 vintage. Another 92-point stunner, the deep purple color of this wine is almost intoxicating. This wine will start going to your head around the time Frank starts singing “You Go To My Head”, with its heady aromas of black fruits and cedar. This wine really opens up as Frank launches into some of the more sentimental tracks – “Someone To Watch Over Me”, “Nancy (With The Laughing Face)” and “Lost In The Stars” make up the heart of this CD just as dark fruit flavors make up the heart of this wine. Notes of graphite, tar and vanilla add complexity and depth.
You can start to hear some of Frank’s signature swagger taking center stage on the third CD in this collection. In “The Song Is You”, he reaches more confidently for the high notes. In “Body and Soul”, the vibrato is more pronounced. The 2006 Seduction carries the same swagger and confidence, with a deep opaque color, bold aromas of spicy black cherry and a juicy mouthfeel. The flavors in this younger vintage are surprisingly focused – wild berry and black cherry make distinct appearances, with cameos from cedar and spice. As this collection ends with “Why Try To Change Me Now”, one can’t help but agree – together with this vertical of “Seduction, Frank Sinatra has sufficiently wooed us, and we wouldn’t change a thing.
About the Music
In 1941, two years before he began his magnificent solo career at Columbia Records, Frank Sinatra sat in the Hollywood Palladium, chatting with lyricist Sammy Cahn. During the conversation, the 26-year-old vocalist made a bold, unexpected statement. “You know, Sam, one day I’m going to be the greatest singer that ever lived.” While such an assertion might seem cocky – braggadocios, even – in Sinatra’s case it wasn’t. What emerged that day are the first public declaration of Sinatra’s supreme confidence, and the intensity of his passion, determination, and desire.
By the mid-1950s, the confidence (and perhaps, cockiness) had become a hallmark of Sinatra’s persona. But in the 1940s, the confidence he displayed was soft and gentle, his as yet unbruised voice swaddled in delicately spun layers of brilliant musical lace.
Although he became famous for performing signature songs such as “I’ve Got You Under My Skin, “My Way”, and “New York, New York” in concert halls and arenas around the world, the genius of Frank Sinatra began with the music contained herein: the often overlooked (and woefully underappreciated) recordings he made between 1939 and 1952 with Harry James, Tommy Dorsey, and Axel Stordahl. These are the performances that made the world conscious of Frank Sinatra, and created the very first American idol – long before Elvis, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, or Simon Cowell arrived on the scene.
Through the years, many songwriters have cited the Sinatra rendition of their songs as being he “definitive” interpretations. The recordings found on this collection represent the very best pop standards written by the likes of the Gershwins, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne, John Mercer, and a host of other prestigious composers and lyricists. While Frank Sinatra may have re-recorded many of these nuggets later in his career, these are the originals: the warm, expressive musings of a boy on the precipice of becoming a man: a boy singer who would – arguably and prophetically – become the greatest male vocalist who ever lived.
