About the Wine
Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons is one of the most popular pieces of baroque music ever written. While countless recordings have been released over the decades, Joshua Bell’s recording with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields is an interpretation that is both deeply personal and truly original. Similarly, pinot noir is one of the most popular varietals in the wine world. The three wines featured in Roessler Cellars’ Anderson Valley Pinot Noir 3-Pack are unique expressions of the pinot noir grape and of the Anderson Valley terroir. Winemaker Scott Shapley has produced three wines that are both deeply personal and truly original, the perfect accompaniment to Joshua Bell’s gorgeous recording.
Experience Spring (Concerto No. 1 in E Major, Op. 8, No. 1, RV 269) with the 2006 Hein Family Pinot Noir – which showcases bright red fruit. Let this wine open up in your glass over the familiar strings of the Allegro movement, red plum and evergreen aromas wafting on the nose. As the concerto moves into the Largo movement, contemplate spring’s new beginnings and take your first sip - soft cherry flavors match the music’s rich tone. Then, as the vibrant strings of the Allegro Pastorale movement fill the room, strawberry jam flavors make an appearance in the glass. Relish the last notes of “Spring” with this wine’s dark chocolate finish over bright fruit and a touch of oak.
The Allegro non molto from the Summer concerto of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons (Concerto No. 2 in G Minor, Op. 8, No. 2, RV 315) opens at a drowsy tempo, like awakening from a summer nap in a hammock. As the Concerto proceeds through the Adagio movement and into the Presto, it picks up the frantic pace that many of our summers can take on before the strings end emphatically on a single note. Enjoy the last glasses of the Hein Family Pinot Noir over this Concerto and take a break from the summer’s breakneck speed.
The 2006 Savoy Pinot Noir is loaded with autumnal flavors, exquisite when paired with Vivaldi’s Autumn Concerto (Concerto No. 3 in F Major, Op. 8, No. 3, RV 293). Imagine the leaves falling, take a deep breath, and enjoy the wine’s aromas of forest floor, mushroom and spice. Mourn the passing seasons over the Adagio molto, then take a comforting sip of this beautiful wine - flavors of black cherry, dark plum and fig meet earth and spice in a perfect balance. Autumn may just become your new favorite season!
Vivaldi’s Winter Concerto (Concerto No. 4 in F Minor, Op. 8, No. 4, RV 297) features silvery staccato and violin solos reminiscent of shimmering icicles and chattering teeth – warm up with a glass of the 2007 Blue Jay Pinot Noir. Dark and red fruit collide on the palate over the brisk tempo of Allegro non molto. Flavors of mushroom, chocolate, and a winter fire’s smoke all merge over the sweet, warm melody of the Largo. Cinnamon and nutmeg dominate the wine’s long, textured finish as the icicles melt and the Allegro draws the Four Seasons to a close.
Giuseppe Tartini’s “Devil’s Trill Sonata” is including on this recording – a virtuosic performance that provides an elegant soundtrack to any of the three pinots in this 3-pack offering.
About the Music
Grammy® Award-winning violinist Joshua Bell, who has enchanted audiences for two decades with his breathtaking playing and opulent tone, reinvigorates Vivaldi’s perennial favorite, The Four Seasons, one of the most popular works in all of classical music. Widely considered one of the premiere violinists of his generation, Bell is joined on this recording by the celebrated musicians of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields.
For most of us, “history” is an abstraction – a collection of stories, events and individuals from the past. We might read about historical events in books or watch them recreated in films, but it is not really a tangible experience.
Every once in a while, however, it is possible to actually “touch” history, as when Joshua Bell picks up his Stradivarius (made in 1713). That was the very year Giuseppi Tartini conceived his famous “Devil’s Trill” Sonata, heard here. And as Bell himself points out, Tartini was a famous virtuoso whose instrument of choice was a Stradivarius. With these connections we have an uncanny alignment: the piece, the year, the instrument and the performer. Indeed, in the hands of Joshua Bell, history springs to life.
Vivaldi’s set of four Concertos known as “The Four Seasons” is perhaps the most recorded piece in history, but there is no danger here of overpopulating the recording catalogues with “yet another” version. “Of course there are hundreds of performances and it has become one of the most popular pieces of music, ever,” concedes Joshua Bell. “It has crossed boundaries to people who don’t usually even listen to classical music. But at the same time it is such a personal piece and there is so much room for individual interpretation. Actually, there are no two versions that are alike.” It is Bell’s confident yet modest sense of individuality that gives us the opportunity to revisit Vivaldi’s timeless “Four Seasons” without ever having a sense of déjà vu.
